As Millions Watch the First NBO Oman Open, Al Mouj Muscat Firmly Established Itself as a Global Destination for Sports and Health

More than 400 million people watched the $1.75 MN elite golfing event from around the world.

Muscat, Oman – 18 February 2018: Following the first ever European Challenge Tour event to be hosted in Oman, Al Mouj Muscat has firmly solidified its place as a destination for international sporting events and a hub for promoting health and fitness. The inaugural NBO Oman Open, which took place at the award-winning Al Mouj Golf in Muscat, attracted a global audience of more than 400 million golf fans.

The new agreement between title sponsor NBO, in collaboration with the Oman Golf Committee, Oman Golf, and European Tour International, saw the Challenge Tour elevated to a world-class event worth $1.75 MN. As Al Mouj Muscat continues to attract international sporting events of this caliber, it further solidifies its contribution to promote the Sultanate as a global tourism and sporting destination.

Nasser bin Masoud Al Sheibani, CEO of Al Mouj Muscat, said: “Being able to host the country’s first ever European Challenge Tour at Al Mouj Golf was a great honour and an appropriate accolade in light of our efforts in successfully hosting the NBO Road to Oman Golf Classic for five consecutive years. We have proven, together with our partners, that as a destination we are able to successfully host events that can compete on a global scale. We are very much looking forward to the rest of this year’s calendar and even more exciting reasons to visit us at Al Mouj Muscat.”

Beginning of this week, Al Mouj Muscat also hosted stage six of the Tour of Oman, the annual professional road bicycle racing stage race. Additionally, the world-class destination recently celebrated its most successful Al Mouj Muscat Marathon to date, with more than 6,000 runners taking part and nearly 30,000 spectators supporting. The Extreme Sailing Series to Al Mouj Marina is the next event in the destination’s calendar, which will take place in March 2018 for the community and sporting fans to enjoy.

Commenting on the benefit these events have on the community, the CEO added, “As the country’s leading Integrated Tourism Complex, we are not only dedicated to driving growth in the tourism sector, but also promoting the benefits of health and fitness amongst the community. At Al Mouj Muscat Marathon, half of the runners were Omani and we were delighted to see participation from an Omani player at the NBO Oman Open too. This is an extremely positive message to be giving young people in the community and we look forward to more to come.”
