Marathon Puts Al Mouj Muscat Firmly on the Map as a Global Destination for Health and Fitness  

MUSCAT – 28 January 2018: Following the most successful marathon event to date, Al Mouj Muscat has firmly solidified its place as a destination for international sporting events and a hub for promoting health and fitness. Nearly 30,000 people visited The Walk at Al Mouj Muscat alone during the two day running festival to come and support the 6,094 runners that took part.

Nasser bin Masoud Al Sheibani, CEO of Al Mouj Muscat praised spectators for supporting the participating runners from both the community and those visiting from across the world, as well as organiser’s for the smooth running of the event, “The record-breaking 2018 Al Mouj Muscat Marathon demonstrates the growing popularity of our events and I am proud of our community for embracing such a significant sporting occasion that takes place right on their doorstep. We have proven, together with Oman Sail, that as a destination we are able to successfully host events that can compete on a global scale. We are very much looking forward to the rest of this year’s calendar and even more exciting reasons to visit us at Al Mouj Muscat.” 

Al Mouj Muscat welcomed record numbers of visitors during Al Mouj Muscat Marathon weekend, from Thursday 18 to 20 January, a 40% increase year-on-year in footfall. Organiser’s recorded 87 different nationalities took part in the running, firmly establishing Muscat as an international marathon destination, whilst half the runners taking part were Omani.  

Further commenting on the benefit Al Mouj Muscat Marathon has on the community, the CEO added, “As the country’s leading Integrated Tourism Complex, we are not only dedicated to driving growth in the tourism sector in alignment with the Oman 2040 Vision, but also promoting the benefits of health and fitness amongst the community. We are delighted to know that half of the runners competing during the weekend were Omanis, this gives such as positive message to young people in the community and long may it continue.” 

As the title sponsor of the marathon event run by Oman Sail, Al Mouj Muscat has demonstrated its continued commitment to hosting and increasing the number of Muscat attractions. The destination will see a number of globally recognised sporting events over the  next few months including the NBO Oman Open 15- 18 February, Tour of Oman 18 February and the Extreme Sailing Series in March 2018.
