We are passionate about our natural environment and so we were keen to learn what a marine biodiversity team had found after their inspection of Al Mouj’s artificial reef.

The team of divers had been tasked with examining what progress has been made since the installation of the artificial coral reef in 2014. It had been commissioned by Al Mouj in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries with the aim of rejuvenating marine life.

The 60 reef units were placed on the seabed at approximately 5km to the east of the Al Mouj Marina. The first of its kind in the Sultanate, only three species of fish were identified at the time it was created. The marine biodiversity team now reports that it is proving to be the ideal breeding ground for marine life, and is now home to 25 species, including Longfin Bannerfish, Bigeye Snapper and Spotfin Lionfish.

We are delighted to learn that there is now an abundance of marine life off our shoreline. The reef is also supporting our local fishing community and it will no doubt attract diving enthusiasts in the years ahead.
